Hines House
Occupancy maximum of 8 people
Located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, The Hines House (1968) is one of only two Sea Ranch private homes in the National Register of Historic Places. Designed by Moore, Lyndon, Turnbull, and Whitaker (MLTW) -Moore/Turnbull with William Turnbull Jr. as lead architect and built by Sea Ranch Master Builder Matt Sylvia, the home’s inspired “big house and bunk house” concept provides a private and sophisticated retreat for families and friends.
Turnbull skillfully leveraged the natural beauty of the home’s three-acre hillside location by designing soaring multi-level interior spaces, skylights, and walls of windows for stunning views of the ocean and surrounding forest.
Showcasing sweeping Pacific views, the 1,977 square-foot main house (with two large bedrooms, two bathrooms and primary living spaces) and its unique 405 square-foot bunkhouse (with two bedrooms and one bathroom) are connected by a sheltered courtyard terrace. In the main house, the bright living room stretches out beneath vaulted ceilings with plenty of cozy seating and a large fireplace. Overlooking it is the dining/kitchen area, outfitted with new appliances and is fully accessorized. Through sliding glass doors, the adjacent courtyard can serve as a spectacular outdoor entertainment area or a quiet space for savoring morning coffee.
Many furnishings are original to the home, including furniture from Design Research, Alvar Aalto, Charles & Ray Eames; vintage fabrics by Marimekko; and period artwork by Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman and Sister Corita Kent. Contemporary pieces include works by Pae White, Catherine Opie, Jim Iserman, Elliot Huntley, Ruben Ochoa, Ai Weiwei and Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, In addition to its placement in the national register, the Hines House was awarded the Sunset/AIA Home of the Year Award in 1970, and has been extensively published in Japan, Europe and North America.
Located in the southernmost part of The Sea Ranch, The Hines House is an easy drive or hike to the Moonraker Recreation Center, Black Point Beach and The Sea Ranch Lodge.
