Serendipity and the story behind these images.
Many photographs are carefully planned, and sometimes orchestrated events. The photographer sets out in a particular month and time of day with just the right equipment, models may be used, and some even “pre-visualize” the image and print. But I am finding that many of my best photographs are not made with this approach; instead, serendipity plays an outsized role.
Serendipity is different from just being lucky, for one must be prepared to capitalize on opportunities that arise unexpectedly. I have come to think of it as something that can be cultivated, a skill that can be refined.
Perhaps that is what Louis Pasteur meant when he said “Luck favors the prepared mind” as did Gary Player, the golfer who quipped “The more I practice, the luckier I get”.
In these photographs, I describe how something wonderful happened unexpectedly, and because I was open to it and prepared, I was able to make the photograph. I hope you too will set goals; but in your creative and even work life, be open to what is offered, and prepared to act when you recognize the gift.
About the artist: Arun is interested in making minimalist quiet compositions influenced by the principles of Asian landscape painting, and in making unique and expressive prints, especially on Japanese handmade washi. You can learn more and see Arun's work at ArunPatelStudio.com.
