I have always been captivated by the beauty and resilience of aging barns and weathered structures. These buildings, with their timeless patina and enduring strength, serve as metaphors for the human journey. As they weather nature’s challenges over time, we too grow stronger and wiser, shaped by life’s incredible gifts and often heartbreaking trials.
Through my technique of layering paint, ink, and pencil on large wood panels, I aim to capture the stoic beauty and evolving character of these structures. Each crack and aging plank symbolizes our shared journey, echoing the trials, triumphs, and eternal spirit that define us. These weathered edifices stand as silent testaments to the resilience and perseverance of the human spirit, inspiring us to stand tall and push forward, no matter the hardships we face.
Painter Donald Hershman balances dual careers as an accomplished podiatric surgeon and artist, driven by a deep need for creative expression. He finds the same sense of flow in painting as in surgery, transforming subjects into vibrant, reimagined spaces infused with passion and humor.
Hershman’s work has been featured in the de Young Open (2020, 2023) and exhibited in solo shows, including Donald and Victor: Under the Influence (2021) and Code Switching (2023) at Salomon Arts Gallery in New York. His I AM A BARN series, exploring resilience through aging structures, was shown at Radian Gallery in San Francisco and highlighted in SF Arts Magazine (2024).
In 2025, Hershman will present solo exhibitions at Tony Wessling Contemporary, MAG Galleries (San Francisco), and Artifact Gallery (New York). His work is collected both nationally and internationally.
