The Sea Ranch Lodge

In At the Threshold, San Francisco-based artist Jessie Laura presents a new body of stitched paintings and canvas collages that examine the boundary between the physical world and the transcendental one.

Laura builds her surfaces through staining, stitching, and layering, absorbing color directly into raw canvas, then applying translucent white overlays that partially conceal geometric forms beneath. The raw canvas is not passive ground but active material: its texture, warmth, and porosity shape every decision. What remains unpainted is as considered as what is stained.

The works are organized around different color groupings, shifting in temperature and mood, evoking the landscape. Architectural in their geometry, the paintings reference the structural logic of Sea Ranch without illustrating it: the diagonal, the plane, the threshold between inside and outside that defines the site's design philosophy. The white geometric forms that move across each surface act as vessels of light, a continuation of Laura's earlier white work, now folded into a field of color and atmosphere.

Sea Ranch was built on the belief that human construction and natural environment could achieve genuine synthesis. That ideal has always lived somewhere between aspiration and fact. Laura's works occupy the same productive tension: precise in their making, open in their meaning, suspended between arrival and pursuit. These thresholds are not gates to otherworldly visions but modest ruptures, barely perceptible openings. They invite you to notice the surface, the process, the moment just before transformation.

At the Threshold is Laura's second solo exhibition at The Sea Ranch Lodge, following Modernist Utopia in 2024.

About The Artist: Jessie Laura (b. 1987, Lima, Peru) is a Peruvian visual artist and creative director based in San Francisco. Working primarily in mixed media, her practice moves between collage, relief, and stitched painting, using geometric abstraction to explore form, light, and spatial rhythm. Influenced by natural systems and modernist design, she creates compositions that invite slow looking through material restraint, repetition, and negative space.

Laura studied Film at the School of Visual Arts in New York (SVA NYC) and holds a BFA in Design. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Japan, completed residencies at Rule Gallery in Marfa, Texas, and Art Warehouse in Delray Beach, Florida, and her work has been featured by Hyperallergic, Artsy, Apartment Therapy, and as The Other Art Fair's Director's Pick (2023). Her work is held in private and corporate collections in the U.S. and U.K.
