Coastal Currents

In Coastal Currents, Sea Ranch artist Kathleen Alexander presents paintings inspired by the rugged Northern California coast. Her work honors the species that inhabit this landscape while acknowledging their resilience and vulnerability.

After spending the first 45 years of her life in the Bay Area, Alexander moved to Maui for twelve years where tropical flowers were the focus of her paintings. After moving back to California, Alexander found new sources of inspiration in her backyard along our beautiful coast.

The abalone shells recall a once-thriving coastal tradition, no longer allowed due to habitat loss and declining populations. Pelicans in flight capture the quiet strength of these iconic birds. Kelp paintings, created with permission from underwater photographer and filmmaker Marco Mazza, reveal the underwater forests that sustain marine life. Alexander’s plein air oil paintings capture a moment in time along the coast.

Through her paintings, Kathleen Alexander invites reflection on what endures—and what we are called to protect—along this remarkable coast.
