BALANCED
Balanced by Kerry Mansfield emerges from a lengthy collaboration with an anonymous artist working along the Northern California coast. Rather than simple stacking, the work involves the precise, often improbable balancing of large stones—structures held in place by minute points of contact, gravity, and an acute sensitivity to weight and form.
The collaborator’s process is physically exacting—selecting stones with care, lifting and repositioning substantial weight through repeated attempts until a precarious equilibrium is achieved. Locations were not incidental; they were deliberately chosen, drawing on Mansfield’s deep familiarity with the coastline to shape how the work would ultimately be seen.
These sculptures exist only briefly. Each configuration is inherently unstable, subject to wind, vibration, and the constant movement of the ocean. Photographing them required a parallel form of attention— waiting, watching, and often positioning herself in physically difficult, even precarious locations to meet the work at the exact moment it resolved.
The act of photographing becomes inseparable from the act of making—the work completed only in the moment it is seen and fixed. The resulting images are not documents of permanence, but of alignment. They mark the instant when opposing forces—mass and delicacy, control and collapse—come into temporary equilibrium. What appears solid is, in fact, on the verge of disappearance.
