Playful Ways of Seeing

Now 85, Maynard has been ‘drawing+painting’ and ‘inventing+model-making’ since early childhood — always encouraged to ‘look+learn+create+share.’ He’s been doing so for decades; his ‘sharing’ has been in the realms of teaching and in developing products for the housewares and furniture industries, and designing retail environments, including galleries and design shops, beginning in 1967 when he opened ColorForm — a small toy shop in Santa Monica, specializing in hand-made playthings.

As an artist and designer, color + form reign importantly in Maynard’s mind — in his ‘seeing+sharing’ through creating objects and images, sometimes ‘playfully.’ The artworks in this exhibit — whether his 3D ‘Looking Boxes’ or his paintings+drawings — are ones he’s made in 2026.

About the artist:

Maynard Hale Lyndon (b. 1941): Artist & Product Designer & Entrepreneur & Gallerist, now lives in Healdsburg, yet has been close to The Sea Ranch since its beginnings in the mid-1960s. He and his wife Lu lived here at The Sea Ranch full time for over 20 years — after returning to California from 30 years in Boston where they founded the Placewares stores (1978 - 2004). Then in Gualala, Maynard and Lu opened Placewares+LyndonDesign Gallery, then later opened LyndonDesign Gallery on The Sea Ranch — where they represented several artists and architects. Maynard’s own artworks have been exhibited+published widely over many years. Maynard may be reached by email at [email protected]
