Maynard has been drawing, painting, and creating since childhood, encouraged by his family to look, learn, create, and share. His sharing has spanned teaching, product development, and retail environments, including galleries and design shops. After working with architects in the 1960s, he opened a handmade toy shop in Santa Monica and later held Director roles in product development at Creative Playthings and Forms&Surfaces.

In 1972, Maynard met his wife Lu at Design Research, and together they founded several design companies, including Placemakers, Placewares, and LyndonDesign, as well as the LyndonDesign Gallery at The Sea Ranch. After closing the gallery in 2024, they moved to Healdsburg and continue their design work through their LyndonDesign studio.

For this special exhibit, Maynard has focused on painting square formats since March 2025, inspired by his ‘Looking Boxes’ and Bruno Munari’s book Discovery of the Square. The works include 8”x8” and 12”x12” pieces on deckle-edged Indian rag paper and birch panels, using acrylics, watercolors, and colored pencils, under the series title ‘Within A Square.

A small square book, designed by Hall Kelley—titled ‘Within A Square’

is also available in limited quantities here at the Lodge or at  [email protected]
