“If we love and take care of the place we are in, we arrive to what we are looking for." - Sergio Larrain, Valparaiso
In the 1960’s and 70’s, the Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain photographed and published street scenes in his city of Valparaiso, Chile. While Valparaiso, a gritty South American port city, and The Sea Ranch might seem to have little in common, they both front the Pacific Ocean, connected by some 6,000 miles of coastline.
The photographs of The Sea Ranch in this exhibit, with one exception, are made with technology similar to what Larrain used in the 1960’s — a 35 mm camera and black and white film. They focus on interaction and dialog between the man-made and natural environments. The book of seventeen Sea Ranch photographs accompanying this exhibit is a small tribute to the concept of Larrain’s original modest volume.
