Two prominent rock formations rise out of the surrounding meadow, making the home a metaphorical “third rock”. Originally known as Sea Meadow (The Brugler House), Third Rock was designed by Obie Bowman, FAIA, in 1983, and, with its composition shingles and an earth-covered triangular roof, it was his first living-roof design. It was recognized for outstanding achievement in design with an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Redwood Empire Chapter (1986); a Merit Award for Excellence in Design from the AIA California Council (1987); and a Western Homes Award of Merit from the AIA and Sunset Magazine (1987-1988).
